The conflict between Indonesia’s Corruption Eradication Commission (KPK) and the National Police has dominated headlines in Indonesia this year. What has been the impact of this conflict on the KPK? How can the commission best tackle corruption? Is the death penalty an appropriate penalty for corruption crimes?
In this Talking Indonesia episode, I put these questions to Professor Jimly Asshiddiqie, who is one of the candidates to become a new KPK commissioner later this year. Professor Jimly was founding chief justice of the Constitutional Court and is a professor of constitutional law at the University of Indonesia, as well as chair of the Honorary Council of Electoral Management Bodies. He presented the Distinguished Asian Lecture on “Islam, Democracy, and the Future of the Death Penalty” at the Melbourne Law School in 2015.
